Angeliki Mouzakiti

”Hope is coming” was the main slogan of the electoral campaign of the political party SIRIZA(Coalition of the Radical Left) which managed to win the elections in Greece on the 25th of January 2015, to form a coalition government with the party of Independent Greeks and to change the political agenda in Greece and partly in Europe…

In fact, not only the slogan, but the whole strategy upon which the electoral campaign was built proved to be very successful, since it had an appeal to many people with different ideological and political orientations, from radical and romantic revolutionaries to people with liberal and even conservative views and beliefs. All this diverse electoral body had and has something very important in common: They were- and still are- greatly affected by an unprecedented debt crisis that burst out in Greece in 2009 and can be attributed to many factors such as the contradictions of the global capitalist system, the structural problems of the eurozone and the establishment of a corrupt party-system in the past 30-40 years…

Siriza has managed to gain fruitful experience from the resistance movements against the austerity measures that burst out in Greece during the period 2010-2012 and from its position as the main Opposition Party during the period 2012-2015. Although its promises about the addressing of the humanitarian crisis, the reduction of the debt and the fight against corruption could highly be regarded as revolutionary, they are fundamental for the recovery of the greek economy and society and for the improvement of every day life of the Greek citizens….So it is no wonder why these promises managed to mobilize the masses and turn them into supporters of Siriza’s alternative plan …

However, in the past few days a great deal of skepticism, mixed feelings and controversies has prevailed among the voters and supporters of Siriza concerning the temporal agreement which was signed a few days ago between the greek government and its creditors. Was the agreement a victory or a defeat? The answer to the question is simple: Neither triumph nor a defeat …Both those who have had great expectations and now are crying out that the greek negotiation team has signed a humiliating agreement with the Europeans and those who are talking about ‘’triumph’’ are more than naive: They seem to ignore that we are just at the beginning of a very long, painful process which involves not only strategy but also tactical manoeuvres, not only victories but also compromises not only steps forward but also steps behind.A road full of continuities, discontinuities and ruptures. One thing is for sure: The greek government has managed to buy time….Enough time in order to promote reforms which mainly involve the tax system and the fight against corruption and to prepare itself for the main ‘’battle’’ in June with the European creditors …

The highly contradicting views on the outcome of the negotiations can be attributed to two factors: First of all, the diversity of views concerning the relations of Greece with the Eurozone, since there are people who insist on the need of staying in the Eurozone and trying to implement and promote different economic and social policies and those who believe that the abandoning of the Eurozone would be the solution to the Greek problem. Secondly, the unreadiness of the majority of the Greek people to deal with the side effects of a possible conflict with Europe. Even those who are now demanding from the government a conflict at all costs, have a very vague picture of these ‘’costs’’…
From now on what? The challenges lie ahead: both for the greek government and the greek people. The situation is still very fluid and delicate and calls for cautious steps….

Od sada u šta ulazi zvanicna Atina? U izazov: kako za Grčku vladu i grčki narod. Situacija je i dalje veoma fluida i delikatna i poziva na oprezne korake…(k) A.M
